What are essential oils
Essential oils are volatile oils which are directly distilled from a plant. Many different molecular structures make up volatile oils. They are mainly responsible for the scent of a plant. The power of your scent is significant. When you breath in essential oil, you are inhaling the volatile molecules released into the air.
How Essential oils work
These molecules enter your nose and gets stuck in your olfactory membrane. This membrane contain highly specialised nerve endings called Olfactory receptors. Once these receptors recognise a scent molecule, they send signals to your olfactory bulb which signals your cortex and limbic system of your brain. Your brain then releases neuro signals (chemicals) and hormones based on the effects from the scent into your body. For example, if you inhale the calming scent of lavender, your brain will release calming neuro signals and hormones into your body. This will result in you feeling more calm and relaxed.
